Coffee has long been a part of our culture (did you know that Robusta coffee is considered an indigenous coffee species in Uganda?).
Coffee is heavily enshrined within our cultures in almost all parts of the country like in the central region (Buganda Kingdom), coffee is used as a sign of friendship, welcoming strangers or visitors into a home or society.
For instance, “emwanyi” which means coffee beans in the Luganda language (spoken by the Baganda; a Bantu tribe in Central Uganda) was used as an emblem in brotherhood rituals (blood pacts), initiation of new people into the community and celebrating the birth of twins.
Furthermore, the Baganda would drink coffee to freshen up their breath, keep them strong and active during work. They also used it in the treatment of some heart-related illnesses and asthma.
Indigenously, robusta coffee used to grow in the wild around the Lake Victoria basin until people started cultivating it in their household plantations.
Withstanding micro and macro challenges, Uganda has become a major coffee-producing country on the global stage; number 1 in Africa after overtaking Ethiopia.
However, most of the coffee produced today in Uganda is destined for export and more needs to be done to promote and increase local consumption.
According to Uganda Coffee Development Authority, Uganda’s coffee exports for FY2021/22 hit 6.26 million bags despite the drought. This is in contrast to 350,000 (60kg) bags in 2021/22 from 244,800 bags in 2017/18.

Uganda Coffee Development Authority has released the September coffee export report:
“Coffee exports in September 2022 were 503,695 bags worth US$ 71.22m. Robusta was 464,118 bags valued at US $62m & Arabica 39,577 bags (US$ 9m). The top destinations were Italy, Sudan & Germany. Value increased by 7% compared to Sep 2021.” UCDA tweeted.

According to UCDA’s report, Farm-gate prices for Robusta Kiboko averaged UGX 2,700 per kilo; FAQ UGX 7,050 per kilo, Arabica parchment UGX 11,500 per kilo and DRUGAR UGX 10,500 per kilo. Report CY 2021/22 Issue 12 Key Highlights Coffee exports for 12 months (Coffee Year 2021/22) totaled 5.85 million bags worth US$ 876.43 million compared to 6.50 million bags worth US$ 630.01 million the previous year (Coffee Year 2020/21). This represents a decrease of 10% in quantity but an increase of 39% in value. 79% of the total volume was exported by 10 exporters, out of 47 companies that performed during the month compared to 77% in August 2022. Sustainable Arabica Fully Washed Sipi Falls fetched the highest price at US $ 5.81 per kilo.
The 10% decrease in exports was attributed to reduced yields this year as a result of prolonged drought in most regions. “This led to a shorter main harvest season in central and East regions and reduced harvests from greater Masaka and South-Western regions.” reads UCDA’s tweet in part.

Keep it shelved
If you want to keep your ground coffee and roasted coffee beans, we recommend that you store your coffee in a cool dry place away from direct exposure to light, humidity, and heat.
Store your coffee in airtight containers. This enables you to keep your coffee fresh for long yet maintain its flavors and taste by sealing it off from the external environment. However, if you plan on keeping your coffee in the seller’s package, it should have a zipper that you can open and seal off again after the serving is removed. Or else, you should fold it properly and use a peg to hold the folding in place, to prevent your coffee from getting aerated.
Furthermore, the container should be opaque to keep it from direct exposure to light.
It is also important to note that whereas we strongly advise you against having your coffee exposed to heat, the same applies to keeping it in very cold temperatures like in a refrigerator in your kitchen at home. This is because, during the process and time of use, your coffee will get exposed to temperature fluctuations and thereby become humid which affects your coffee flavor and causes it to go stale as well innately.

Avoid overstocking
the best way to have and enjoy fresh coffee for every serving is largely behavioral and that is not overstocking.
Practice buying sufficient amounts from your favorite local and or international coffee store for a short time like a month’s serving as opposed to buying a lot (several months’ servings). This also takes away the heavy storage burden that many people tend to struggle with and minimizes waste that might result from poor storage. Use your space in your kitchen and pantry for other things and hobbies.
Store it separately
Coffee is a delicate and sacred beverage. Therefore it should be stored and treated with the divine respect it deserves.
You would not want to drink a cup of coffee with some unexpected unnatural flavors stemming from poor storage tendencies.
Without contaminants taking away or adultering its flavor palates and or causing it to go stale, you can be sure to have your coffee remaining fresh for a considerable period (but the above-aforementioned factors should be factored in and observed religiously).
